There are so many times when I see depictions of NYC nightlife and parties on TV and I’m just like, “This isn’t real. No one is like this. This isn’t the world I inhabit. I wore Toms with a $50 sundress and everyone was nice and the bartender gave me a free glass of wine because I talked to him about Doctor Who for five minutes.”
Then, every once in a while, a friend invites you to a party that’s at a bar in the Meatpacking District, and since it’s his birthday you go. And you wind up at the Standard Bier Garten hating everyone and hating everything and hating the $12 glasses of wine and hating the fact that the second time you went to the ladies’ room, the toilet seat was up for no apparent reason since it’s the fucking ladies’ room and ladies sit on seats to pee.
You see the people around you and think for a brief moment, “Oh, this is where the inspiration for those weird, horrible parties on TV comes from.” Then when you stop to really observe the people around you, you discover that those parties on TV are still completely fictional. These people are behaving in this ridiculous, self-important, clearly insecure manner because that’s how they saw people behaving on TV in their adolescence.
What I’m trying to say is that “art-life, life-art” is an even bigger mindfuck when you add overpriced booze and HBO to the mix.
