Conversations with kids always leave me stunned at how amazing being a kid is.

This morning, I took my kids to daycare. After I’d dropped them off in their respective classrooms, I went to put my 3 year old’s lunch away in a fridge in one of the big activity rooms… a room that is full of elementary school aged kids waiting for the bus every morning.

This morning, I overheard the kids all talking about their favorite characters.

“Jake the Dog!”

“Creeper!” (That’s a Minecraft thing, right?)

“Elsa!”

A girl that was about 10 said “Legolas!” and a few of the other kids shrugged it off. I turned and said “I’m a Samwise fan myself, but Legolas is pretty great.”

She must have recognized a kindred nerd spirit in me because she launched into a 3 minute, frenzied talk about The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit and her love for them. She even fit in a  “and I KNOW it’s not in the movies but in the books…”

I told her she sounded like a true Tolkien Scholar.

She looked at me like I was crazy. “What’s that?”

“Oh, a Tolkien Scholar is someone who studies Tolkien’s books… like, as a job.”

She got very quiet for a minute and said “You can do that for a job?”

“Yep.”

She looked right at me and said “I know what I want to be when I grow up.” My heart almost melted, the moment was so cute.

Then the bus came and she left.

And I have to live with the fact that in the timespan of about 6 minutes, I created a Liberal Arts major.

I’m going to need to take this to the theater with me.

Yeah, I’m probably going to need this as well.

Martin Freeman: Well…erm…

I’m writing fan fiction again you guys.

This is how it begins.

I found this edition (and those of the trilogy) at my aunt’s last week, and I still can’t decide if 1966 was ugly or bitchin’. What I do know is that the first few pages were laughable, and I no longer intend to read it before seeing and probably loving the movie.
