"On Wednesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is scheduled to unveil the new city budget, and many CPL folks are worried that libraries will take a hit. The city is deep in debt, and cuts across the board seem inevitable. But I hope the mayor reads what one of his predecessors said when opening the city’s first library so long ago: “The influence and power of a city, state or nation is not measured by its numbers,” said Medill, “but by its enlightenment, by its thinkers."
